BIRDSEYE VIEW POSTS

Since 2012 on the now retired Weather Underground blogs, I have been posting annotated "birdseye view" charts of the Atlantic basin, with a detailed explanation and forecasting that references the chart. From there you may know me as "NCHurricane2009." While I now do these "birdseye view" posts here, I will continue to do comments at Yale Climate Connections via Disqus where the former Weather Underground community has moved to. Feel free to reply to me there, at my Disqus feed at this link, or via e-mail at IOHurricanes@outlook.com

*******Note that forecast and outlooks in this post are NOT the official forecast from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). They are my own detailed views on the Atlantic tropics based on current observations and latest computer model runs. As such do not make decisions based on my posts...consult news media...watches and warnings from your local weather office...and any evacuation orders issued by local governments to make the most informed and best decisions. Visit the NHC website hurricanes.gov (hurricanes dot gov) for the latest watches/warnings and official forecasts on active tropical cyclones.*********

…UPDATE… MONDAY SEPTEMBER 30 2024 10:00 AM EDT…

The completed list of southeastern United States wind reports asssociated with Helene is now available below.

...FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 27 2024 3:45 PM EDT...

Satellite image of Tropical Storm Helene inland over the southeastern United States while entangled within the east side of a large upper vortex... the surface center of Helene is marked with red arrow... image taken at 1330Z earlier this morning:

This special update thread is to document the widespread impacts across the southeastern United States from tropical cyclone Helene while I am still composing my next full update on the Atlantic tropics. Since landfall with north Florida... the center tracked across Georgia... then the western edge of the Carolinas... and now is arcing more westward around the north side of the steering upper vortex which has brought the center to the eastern Kentucky/Tennessee border as of this writing. For several hours today the system maintained enough winds inland to be considered a tropical storm... even as the center trekked through the western edge of the Carolinas. Finally as of 2 PM EDT it has been downgraded to a tropical depression. The long distance inland as a vigorous tropical cyclone was due to the fast forward speed provided by the jet on the east side of the steering upper vortex... and the eastern divergence zone of the upper vortex slowing the decay rate of the surface low pressure center. The worst wind and heavy rainfall flooding impacts were felt across northern Florida (eastern Florida panhandle and northwestern parts of the peninsula)... Georgia... and the western Carolinas. Going forward the following impacts are expected over the next 24 hours:

(1) Wind... gusty winds with isolated damage potential across Georgia... Alabama... Mississippi... eastern Arkansas... southeastern Missouri... Tennessee... Kentucky... southern Illinois... southern Indiana... southern Ohio... the western Virginias (including most of West Virginia)... and the western Carolinas. A summary of the peak winds measured by the National Weather Service Stations is provided below... so far only Florida is provided... however will be adding the other states in the region over the next hours.

(2) Rainfall... based on the latest doppler radar presentation periods of additional heavy rainfall with flood potential is expected across far eastern North Carolina... eastern and northern Virginia... West Virginia... Maryland... southern New Jersey... southern Pennsylvania... Ohio... Indiana... southern Illinois... eastern Missouri... western Kentucky... western Tennessee... northeastern Arkansas... and northern Mississippi.

(3) Tornadoes... the severe thunderstorm and tornado zone has shifted north into eastern North Carolina and eastern Virginia.
